Why is Generation Z so lonely?

Updated: Feb 20

As a mentor, one of the most common themes I hear from younger clients—especially those in Gen Z—is a sense of loneliness. Despite being more connected than ever through technology, many in this generation report feeling isolated, misunderstood, and disconnected from others. But why is this the case? How can a generation that has never known a world without smartphones and social media feel so lonely?

In this post, we’ll dive into some of the key factors contributing to the loneliness crisis among Gen Z, from the impact of technology to economic inequality and the effects of globalization.

The Paradox of Connection: Technology and Social Media

One of the most obvious, yet paradoxical, contributors to loneliness in Gen Z is the omnipresence of technology. While digital tools allow us to be "connected" 24/7, research suggests that they can also increase feelings of isolation. Social media, in particular, is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it provides a space for self-expression, sharing, and connecting with others. But on the other hand, it can create unrealistic standards of beauty, success, and happiness.

Social media often leads to comparisons, where users measure their own lives against the carefully curated highlight reels of others. This can trigger feelings of inadequacy and a sense that others are living fuller, more connected lives. Studies have shown that the more time spent on social media, the higher the likelihood of feeling lonely or disconnected—ironically, despite being "more connected" than ever.

Moreover, digital communication lacks the depth of in-person interactions. Texts, tweets, and DMs can’t replicate the warmth and empathy of face-to-face conversations, making online relationships feel shallow and leaving Gen Z with a growing sense of emotional emptiness.

Economic Inequality: A Generation Under Pressure

The economic landscape is another significant factor in the loneliness epidemic. Gen Z, often defined as those born between 1997 and 2012, has come of age during times of financial instability. Many entered the workforce during or after the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when jobs were scarce, and the economy was in turmoil. The pressure to succeed in a highly competitive job market, while also grappling with student debt, housing costs, and low wages, can leave young people feeling overwhelmed and anxious.

Economic inequality has only widened, and for Gen Z, this has translated into a deep sense of uncertainty about the future. Financial instability can lead to mental health challenges, including loneliness, as young people struggle to establish their careers, pay bills, and save for the future. With less time for socializing, and fewer resources to connect with others in meaningful ways, the financial strain exacerbates feelings of isolation.

In addition, the growing cost of living in many parts of the world has made it difficult for young people to build the traditional milestones of adulthood, such as buying a home, starting a family, or establishing long-term social networks. Without these markers of achievement, Gen Z may feel disconnected from their peers or society at large, reinforcing their sense of loneliness.

Globalisation: The Loss of Community and Identity

Globalisation has had a profound effect on how young people interact with the world. On one hand, it has brought people closer together, allowing for greater access to diverse cultures, ideas, and opportunities. On the other hand, it has also led to a loss of traditional community structures, which were once a source of connection and belonging.

In many cases, Gen Z has grown up in an environment where local, face-to-face communities are increasingly replaced by global digital networks. This can lead to a sense of rootlessness, as people feel less connected to their immediate surroundings and more disconnected from their physical communities. The pace of globalisation has made it easier to access the “global village” of information and virtual relationships, but it has also fractured the sense of identity and belonging that comes from local, tangible communities.

The result?

Many Gen Zers feel adrift in a world that offers endless opportunities but few stable places where they can form lasting, meaningful connections. Instead of being tied to one place or culture, they are constantly moving, adapting, and searching for the next big thing—which can deepen the sense of loneliness and displacement.

Mental Health Struggles: The Silent Crisis

Mental health struggles, including anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation, have become more prevalent in Gen Z than in previous generations. According to the American Psychological Association, Gen Z is the most anxious generation in modern history, with many reporting higher levels of stress and emotional strain.

The combination of financial worries, social media comparisons, and global uncertainty creates a perfect storm for mental health challenges. Loneliness, often linked to depression and anxiety, can amplify these issues, creating a cycle that is difficult to break. The stigma surrounding mental health also means that many young people suffer in silence, reluctant to reach out for help or share their feelings of isolation.

The Role of Family and Support Networks

Lastly, the breakdown of traditional family structures and the weakening of support networks have contributed to the loneliness epidemic. In many cases, family dynamics have changed over the years, with more Gen Zers growing up in single-parent households or facing strained relationships with relatives.

Additionally, many Gen Z individuals have left their hometowns to pursue education or career opportunities, often far from family and childhood friends. This geographic mobility, while offering exciting new experiences, can also lead to a lack of stability and deep connections.

So, What Can Be Done?

While these factors may seem overwhelming, there are ways to address loneliness and help Gen Z navigate these challenges.

  1. Promote Digital Balance: Encouraging Gen Z to take breaks from social media and prioritize face-to-face interactions can help reduce feelings of comparison and emotional exhaustion.

  2. Invest in Mental Health: Providing accessible mental health resources and creating spaces where young people can talk openly about their struggles is critical in helping Gen Z cope with loneliness and anxiety.

  3. Foster Meaningful Connections: Encouraging deeper, more authentic connections—whether through community organizations, shared hobbies, or volunteer work—can help counteract the shallowness of online interactions.

  4. Support Financial Literacy: Offering financial education and resources can empower young people to take control of their finances, reduce stress, and feel more secure about their future.

  5. Rebuild Communities: By strengthening local community networks, fostering intergenerational connections, and creating spaces where young people can belong, we can help them feel more rooted and supported.

While Gen Z faces a unique set of challenges, it’s important to remember that loneliness doesn’t have to be a permanent condition. With the right tools, support, and mindset, young people can navigate the complexities of modern life and build meaningful, lasting connections. As a mentor, I believe that we can all help create a more connected, supportive world—one that fosters both individual growth and collective well-being.
